Dilemma: One-Piece or Two-Piece Water Closets?
Dilemma: One-Piece or Two-Piece Water Closets?
Mar 19, 2025

With the bathroom as an integral part of everyday life, it is important that we pick the correct toilet bowl so that we can go about our business in comfort.

One thing that comes into our mind: Should I get a one-piece or two-piece WC? Which is actually better? Is there a difference?

Yes, there is a difference! But it is less so that one is better than the other but more of what you're looking for. To illustrate this, let's have a look at OttO Mercury and Coral models, and the differences and similarities between them as one-piece and two-piece toilet bowls.

One piece VS Two piece

Here are the factors that might affect your choice:

1. SIZE

As a general rule of thumb, there's no hard rule that a one-piece or two-piece WC is smaller or bigger. As can be seen from Mercury and Coral, their size differences are not very big, differing at most at 20mm.

As such, size should not be the only factor you use to decide between a one-piece and two-piece. Generally, wide varieties of sizes are available for you to choose from based on your needs so do consult our staff on the size you are require so we can get you the right recommendations.

2. CLEANING

With regards to cleaning, there is no doubt that a one-piece WC will be easier to clean. A two-piece WC comes in two pieces leaving a slight gap between the water tank and the bowl itself after installation. This will require more care when cleaning these areas as they are prime breeding grounds for bacteria.

A one-piece WC would not have this problem as it comes in one whole piece. This makes it easier to wash and wipe the toilet bowl. The ease of cleaning should be seen as an important factor especially if you have less time to clean because of a busy schedule.

3. DURABILITY

Durability of the toilet bowl should be shared across the brand (as is the case for us), as the toilet bowl is made with the same materials and fitted with similar mechanisms.

The inner mechanisms used would also be the same, meaning to say that they should function the same as well. In the case of Mercury and Coral, this stands true as seen with how both utilises a washdown flush mechanism. Therefore, you can be well assured that both one-piece or two-piece WC will be durable for long-term use.

4. COST

With the higher difficulty involved in making a one-piece WC, prices for them are usually higher. In the case of Mercury and Coral, Mercury costs about 30% more than Coral.

This makes two-piece WCs affordable options and is definitely a considering point if you are on a tight budget.

5. AESTHETICS

Everything else aside, aesthetics also play a huge role when it comes to choosing your toilet bowl. As we see from Mercury and Coral, the two actually have the same design but it has been catered to meet different needs of the consumers thus being available as one-piece and two-piece models. While this might not be the case for all models, sometimes choosing based on your preferred aesthetics can be reason enough.

At Hupfarri, we make sure that the designs we have are wide enough to cater to the tastes of all our customers. We also ensure that our WCs are modern and sleek, be it one-piece or two-piece.

6. MAINTENANCE

In general, there is higher difficulty involved when maintenance works are needed for one-piece toilet bowls as their tank is attached to the body. Compared to a two-piece toilet bowl, their parts are separate making it easier to access based on the maintenance that might be required for the toilet bowl. However, this is not a major cause of concern and will be highly dependent on the issues you might encounter.

Ultimately, the choosing of your toilet bowl is a personal choice and one that you must take serious consideration into as you will be using it every day. For more tips on choosing toilet bowls, check this out!
